Green Revolution

A green revolution has taken place in the City of Chennai in the form of development of Parks, Roadside Parks, Traffic Islands, Traffic Central Medians and the Space below the flyovers. Avenue tree planting has also been taken up along mainroads and streets. This major development with emphasis on greenery reduces the carbon-di-oxide content in the atmosphere and allows the citizens to breathe pollution free air. This transformation from a dry wry city to a green aesthetic delight has brought fresh smiles not only to the faces of the citizens but also to the tourist and floating population of the State's Capital.

Parks

The Corporation of Chennai is maintaining about 230 Parks in Chennai. Some of these major parks that serve as lung space to the locality are Anna Park in Royapuram, Gandhi Park in Perambur, Dr.Visweshwariah Tower Park in Anna Nagar, May Day Park in Chintadripet, Independence Day Park in Nungambakkam, Panagal Park in T.Nagar, Dr.M.G.R.Park in K.K.Nagar and Dr.Nageshwara Rao Park in Mylapore. Of these, Independence Day Park, Gandhi Park, Dr.Visweshwariah Tower Park has been redeveloped newly with fountains and ornamental light attracting a larger public to use them. In Basin Elephant Road, Pulianthope an un-noticed Corporation Land which was encroached by huts and used as a bullock cart yard and also used as an open air toilet was identified and developed into a big beautiful Park bringing a much needed lung space to the congested Pulianthope area. Another large extent of land at College Road, Nungambakkam, which was encroached by a large number of huts, was evacuated and a beautiful Park has been developed. Likewise, Sriramulu Park at Loane Square has been renovated completely and beautifully.Nehru Park in Kilpauk and other Parks were also developed in a big way. Parks are developed by providing beautiful walk paths, flowering plants such as Nerium, Galphimia, Ixora, Allomanda, Euphorbia, Haemilia, Tecoma, Plumbago, Tabernaemontana, Duranta, Acalypha, Pisonia and Ficus,and manicured lawns, hedges and edges, Fountains, Cascades, Garden Benches, Children Play equipments etc.,

Development of Open Spaces and Cana Banks

Large open spaces, which were wasteland, are being developed into Parks. Open space near Napier bridges, the entire stretch of 2.5K.M. along the Marina Beach adjacent to the foot paths, open space near the Turnbulls road junction, open space in Chitra Nagar, Kotturpuram, Open space in Gandhimandapam are being developed as Parks. The banks of Nungambakkam Canal were converted into Parks with walkways, water body, Children Play Apparatus, lush greenery etc. The banks of the Coovam River in Swami Sivananda Salai from Kamaraj Salai to Anna Salai and along Binny road have been taken up for improvements. The Canal Banks at the intersection of important bridges along important roads are to be developed with greenery, which will be visualelight to the passer-bys. The Kodungaiyur Dumping Ground, which serves as a garbage dumping ground for the North Chennai was provided with a touch of greenery outside the dumping ground. If the wasteland belongs to another Service Department, permission is obtained from the Department and developed by the Corporation of Chennai. Eye - sore points, encroachment vulnerable points, open - air urinal nuisance points and waste stretches have been identified and roadside parks developed. About 75 numbers of roadside parks have been developed with plants such as Nerium, Galphimia, Ixora, Allomanda, Euphorbia, Haemilia, Tecoma, Plumbago, Tabernaemontana, Duranta, Acalypha, Pisonia and Ficus.

Traffic Islands

Traffic islands at road junctions have been developed with aesthetics tiles and grills. Plants such as, Haemilia, Allomanda, Nerium, Aeruva, Tecoma, Acalypha, Gaulphimia, Alternanthra are grow in these islands. Some islands are provided with fountains and ornamental lights. About 117 numbers of traffic islands have been developed, some of which are maintained by sponsors.

Traffic Central Medians

Traffic Central Medians are built with pleasant random rubble masonry in all important roads with the top middle portion left for greenery. Plants such as Ixora, Nerium, Galphimia, Russaelia and Pisonia are planted.

Avenue Trees

Avenue tree planting in important roads were taken up extensively. Trees such as Delonix, Peltophorum and Cassia are planted.In 2005-06 6413 nos of avenue tree saplings were planted by the corporation of chennai.

Nursery

The Corporation of Chennai has small level nurseries at My Ladyes Park, Anna Park, Anna Nagar Tower Park and Nageswara Park

Watering

All the greenery developed by the Corporation of Chennai is watered everyday and ensured that they sustain and grow. Bore wells are provided in Parks for irrigating the plants. Water from Bore Wells and through water tankers are used for watering the plants in Roadside parks, Traffic islands and Traffic Central Medians. In order to spare the ground water for the citizens primary Treated sewer water is taken from the treatment plants of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board through water tankers, collected in sumps provided in the Parks, primarily treated and then used for watering the plants.
