Antenatal Care :

Early Registration: All pregnant women are registered as soon as they miss the period and care is given through out their Antenatal period. This early registration also helps to terminate the unwanted pregnancy. 5 visits are given to each AN mother. Various services given are

  • Tetanus Toxoid Ist dose
  • Blood test
  • Blood grouping
  • Blood Sugar
  • VDRL
  • Urine-Albumin & Sugar
  • Height, Weight, Blood Pressure
  • Heart and Lungs examined
  • High risk factors identified

Postnatal Care :

Postnatal follow up Medical Services, growth monitoring etc Minimum 3 visits are given to each PN Mother.

Institutional Coverage (Deliveries) :

The Ist Maternity Centre started functioning in Triplicane under Corporation of Chennai in 1917. Now there are 22 Centres functioning with Maternity Ward. 12,000 to 14,000 deliveries are conducted in a year.
The details of delivery, Sterilisation Operations, MTP and Caesarean are furnished below.

Caesarean Section :

Caesarean section started at Saidapet & Sanjeevarayanpet in 1993. Now the operation is performed at Saidapet & Perumalpet only.

Birth Companionship :

An innovative idea of allowing a Women relative to be with the intra-natal mother in the labour room to give physical and emotional support to the mother.

Criteria for Labour Companion :

  • Only Female Companion allowed.
  • She should wear clean clothes she should not interfere with the hospital work and the labour management of the patient.

Selection Criteria :

A Question air will be given at the time of admission to the Birth Companion.

  • Experience of the Birth Companion will be recorded.
  • Experience of the intra-natal mother will be recorded after the labour.
  • A specialised study to be done regarding the successful implementation of birth Companionship.

Prevention of parent to Child Transmission of HIV (PPTCT) :

  • Testing Antenatal mothers for HIV
  • Pre-test Counselling
  • Post-test Counselling
  • Nutrition for HIV +ve mothers and malnourished

Voluntary testing and Counselling Centres (VCTC) :

  • Control of RTI/STI
  • Testing General Public for HIV
  • Pre-test Counselling
  • Post-test Counselling

Medical Termination of Pregnancy :

Termination of early Pregnancy and unwanted pregnancy are done in 13 Corporation Centres.
