"Best Innovative Award 2014” for the Solidwaste Management Programme implemented at the Athipet dump yard.

  • Zonal officer, Zone-7  Thiru. S.Rajendran was given the “Best Innovative Award 2014” for the Solidwaste Management Programme implemented at the Athipet dump yard.
The dump yard at Athipet was the only resort for the Ambattur Municipality to dump their MSW generated from Ambattur.          The residential areas such as Ayappakkam, Mogappair, ICF Colony, Kamarajarpuram are identified by this smoke as land mark of Athipet dump yard.
It is a perennial problem for the residents of Ambattur every minute, every second, round the year. This smoke covered areas resulted, the people of Ambattur to suffer a lot in health hazards and nuisance.
More over the dumpsite is an extent of 5 acres and with pile of MSW  to a height of 100 feet. Due to the  space constraint the Municipality started dumping vertically too and created MSW mountain by engaging three poclains to various heights.
The dumpsite was not able to be accessed from the main road. Since the MSW was dumped up to the entrance of the yard with the stinky wet leacheate flooded daily collected MSW. A long queue of trucks on the main road created lot of traffic congestion  and a big Traffic Jam was there on the  highway.
The plan of Action was primarily to cool down the volcano and the stinky wet accumulated year long garbage to turn odourless.
    The main objectives were
    1.        To arrest the smoke
    2.        To collect the leachate in a separate well and dispose.
    3.        Dump and transfer operation of daily garbage away from the  vicinity of the public.
    4.        To process the MSW by ISWM ( Integrated Solid Water Management )
Grid road work contractors were insisted to dump the excavated  road materials from the proposed new laying roads to Athipet dump yard.

Plan Of Action:
  • 1.        Two different routes were established. Dumping the daily collected fresh garbage to one route and transfer from Athipet to KDG through the other route. Avoided  waiting time of trucks from dump or to transfer.
    2.        About 350 Mts of garbage is collected daily from the 5 lakh populated Ambattur Municipality. No Back log allowed at the dump site beyond 3’O clock every day.
    3.        No waste Iron source left at the dumping for local anti social elements to lit the MSW during odd hours. Since  this  raw dumping yard is an  unprotected area.
    4.        This activity slowly controlled the smoke.  Now absolutely no smoke in the past one year.  The residents and pass byers were relieved  from the smoke atrocity.
    5.        A separate well  made to collect the  leacheate. Arranged sewerage lorries to collect the leacheate.
    6.        A separate area allotted to erect  a Bio mechanization plant by BARC.
    7.        Dedicated lorries were allotted to collect the wet waste exclusively  and to process in the compost pit made at Athipet in separate areas for windrows  composting.
    8.        A compound wall proposed to demark the dump yard area from the local residential area.
    9.        A over head tank and a sump with  five bore wells were proposed to meet  the water  needs at the dump site
    10.      Erected a temporary  office with electric connection for the workers to stay round the clock and to operate the dump yard.
    11.      Erected street lights to augument night conservancy dumping.
