Bridges Department which was functioning as a part of Works Department came into existence as a separate full fledged department from 10.2.1994.

There are four major watercourses, viz., Cooum River, Buckingham Canal, Adyar River and Otteri Nullah running within the city limit. Besides these, minor channels like Captain Cotton Canal, Virugambakkam Channel, Mambalam Channel etc., run as feeder channels.

Bridges Department is involved in constructing vehicular bridges, culverts, foot-bridges etc., across these waterways to connect the areas situated on either side of the waterways.

This department is entrusted with the work of Constructing Railway Over Bridges and Vehicular Subways in lieu of Railway level crossings aiming to reduce travel time and achieve fuel savings.

In order to improve the existing traffic infrastructure facilities to facilitate free flow of traffic in all possible directions with a view to provide sustainable traffic management system for future requirements.

Grade seperator at Mint Junction, ROB at Rangarajapuram, ROB at Kathivakkam high Road - Cochrane Basin Road, RUB at M.C. Road, RUB at Villivakkam,Bridge connecting Narasimha Nagar and M.S.Nagar across Otteri Nullah, Bridge connecting Krishnamurthy Nagar & M.K.B Nagar across Captain Cotton Canal, Bridge connecting Anna Nagar 'N' Block main road and 'O' Block across otteri Nullah, Bridge across coovam river connecting Metha Nagar Officers 1st Street and VenkataChalapathy Street, Widening the bridge at Wallajah Salai across Buckingham canal,Widening the bridge across Buckingham canal near the junction of Sardar Patel Road and Madhya kailash and, Bridge connecting Indira Nagar 2nd Avenue and Rajiv Gandhi Road are under progress and are expected to be completed during this financial year 2011-2012.
